Overview

Dual Action formula for the comfort of overnight relief

Coloxyl with senna has a dual-action that can assist you when you are suffering from constipation. It provides both stimulant (senna) to encourage the return of normal bowel movement and a stool softener (docusate sodium) to help ensure your comfort and well-being. When taken at night, Coloxyl with senna can provide relief the next morning.

Directions

Adults and children over 12 years: Take 1 to 2 tablets with a glass of water at night before retiring. Use up to four tablets daily if required.

The correct dosage is one that gives a comfortable bowel motion. For most people, one or two tablets provide a comfortable movement in the morning. For others the dose may be increased by one tablet daily (noting that the total daily dose should not exceed 4 tablets) until a satisfactory response is obtained.

Ingredients

There are two key actives in Coloxyl with senna that work in a different but cooperative manner to deliver relief.

Active ingredients:

- Docusate sodium 50mg
- Total Sennosides (calculated as sennoside B) 8mg

Docusate sodium causes more water to move from the body into the colon, softening the stools.

senna works by causing the bowel muscles to become more active and squeeze and contract thereby helping to evacuate the stools.

F A Q

What is constipation?

Constipation refers to a reduction in the frequency of a bowel motion or increased difficulty in passing stools.

If I take Coloxyl with senna tablets as prescribed, will I suddenly have an urgent need to rush to the toilet?

No. It should take effect within 6 - 12 hours1, 2. When Coloxyl tablets are taken prior to retiring you can anticipate relief the next morning.

Is constipation always associated with low fibre intake?

No. The general consensus amongst medical professionals is to begin therapy by increasing fibre and fluid intake if the existing diet is considered inadequate. There are however many other causes such as medications, pregnancy, reduced physical activity, ageing, changes in a persons routine or ignoring the urge to go to the toilet which can all have an impact on the functioning of the bowel.

What is considered a normal bowel function for an adult?

Normal bowel functions vary widely between different people. Everyone has their own bowel habit. The range can vary from once per week to several times every day, depending on the individual. The normal frequency of bowel motions in Western countries varies from 3 times per day to 3 times per week. In general a persons bowel movements are considered infrequent if they are 3 times or less per week or if it is difficult and painful during the passage of stools.

Are there any side effects from taking Coloxyl with senna?

Docusate sodium and senna can sometimes cause abdominal discomfort, cramps and diarrhoea. Prolonged use or overdose may lead to diarrhoea.

Can Coloxyl with senna be taken during pregnancy?

As for other medicines, ask for your Doctors advice if you are pregnant, or likely to become pregnant during your course of taking Coloxyl. The benefits must be assessed against possible risks.

Can Coloxyl with senna be taken if breast-feeding?

As for other medicines, ask for your Doctors advice if you are breast-feeding or likely to breast-feed.

When should I see my Doctor?

Sometimes constipation is a symptom of a more serious condition. Check with you doctor if you have recurrent or severe cases of constipation or if bowel motions are blood-stained or black and tar-like, bowel habits change frequently from constipation to diarrhoea, motions become painful to pass, you are unwell experiencing fever, headache, vomiting and recent weight-loss. Prolonged use of laxatives is undesirable and may lead to dependence. If symptoms persist seek medical advice.
